MoveOn House Parties and SEPTA

In case anyone is curious, the MoveOn house parties decided that electoral reform was the big issue they wanted to concentrate on. Moveon.org has a petition up on their Web site urging a congressional investigation. That seems smarter than using the leftover Kerry money (let that go toward funding other democrats). I filled it out and sent it.

One issue that gets me riled is SEPTA funding. This year's crisis has Rendell threatening to take Federal highway money and use it to fund SEPTA. In this case there seems to be no action I can take--my reps are all dems and support SEPTA funding, it's the Republicans in other parts of the state who block the funding, so they aren't going to pay attention to an e-mail from me. Am I Right?

Ok Miles just walked in so I guess his nap is over.

Maybe we should look at the possibility of a ballot initiative for getting dedicated funding. I don't know what the history or position of transportation groups in the PA region is regarding this strategy but will try to find out.

Don't dismiss using your democratic representative's position even if they are on your side. It is a very helpful for your rep to see that you are interested and engaged in an issue. I would suggest that you call the local office of the rep and ask to speak with the aide in charge of the SEPTA issue for that rep. Once you have that person, run through your list of concerns and ask them how they would recommend that you voice your opinion. It will do two things for you. 1. Give you a relationship with someone on the staff on a real issue, and 2. Show them that they can count on you to be active. This will help you build up some clout within the staff, especially if you have a talent or access the staff does not have, say as someone very familiar with tracking down hard to find information.
