On Beards and Malcontents

The metrosexual backlash has begun.

Paul Bunyan, Modern-Day Sex Symbol - New York Times: "Whenever a countercultural trend becomes a mainstream one, there is a natural tendency to look for deeper meaning. Do beards that call to mind Charles Manson suggest dissatisfaction with 'the system'? Are broody beards, like the dark and somber mood of the fall fashion collections, physical manifestations of a melancholia in the air? Are they a reflection of the stylistic impact on mainstream fashion of the subculture of gay men known as bears, who embrace natural body hair?"

Maybe for the first time since the inception of ol' libmals, I'm not sure what to comment in response to a post.

I guess this post might be viewed as some sort of commentary on the fact that as you saw yesterday, I've been a bit lax with my grooming habits lately?

But you seem to have left out some of the most important quotes in the article:

"But the pretty-boy look can only last for so long."

""It's a nice masculine aesthetic,"

and

"No survey ever conducted about women's attitudes toward beards, even those not underwritten by the Gillette Company, has indicated that more than 2 or 3 percent of women would describe a full beard as sexy."

Well, sure the flip side of that quote is that 97-98% find that beards aren't sexy - but you can't have everything in life - right?

and as for this quote:

"Are they a reflection of the stylistic impact on mainstream fashion of the subculture of gay men known as bears, who embrace natural body hair?"

Unfortunately, I "embrace" an ever-increasing amount of "natural body hair" every time I scratch my back.
