Here's the new Pope's take on social justice in Latin America: Freiheit und Wissen: Ratzinger, Liberation Theology, and Clerical Power: "Ratzinger was John Paul’s right hand man in this endeavor, writing a 35 page diatribe against Liberation Theology, condemning it as an evil, Marxist deviation of the Catholic teaching."

Ok I think I've got you on a contradiction. On the one hand you were saying that there are catholic liberals and the church has done much social justice work, especially in latin america. But you also say, what do you expect? The Catholic Church is "very conservative."
