www.AndrewSullivan.com on the Pope

Ok not to obsess on the new pope or anything, but it's not everyday we discover a papal apologist amongst us! Andrew Sullivan has a post on how radical Benedict XVI is, and also takes on the "what do you expect from the Catholic Church argument."

www.AndrewSullivan.com - Daily Dish: "But from the theocon point of view, the glorious achievement of the secular West is as nihilistic and as dangerous as the Nazis. That is Benedict XVI's view. I don't think people have a clue how radical this man is. And how ferocious a culture war he is about to unleash."

Please. Haven't you heard George? We are the leaders of the free world. We are spreading the will of God -- yeah, it just happens to coincide with the economic interests of our multi-nationals -- but that doesn't prove anything. A few minor kinks like you described, and you want to bring Stalin back from the dead? Go live in Cuba, or something. Love it or leave it, man. Commie Pinko!

By the way, I love the dialogue -- that's what the blog was supposed to be about. I've been too busy to participate, but I hope to be able to jump in after my trip, it you guys are still at it (will be back mid-May).

"It is because the american system threatens culture." This is an interesting sentence. Do you mean "culture" in the broad anthropological sense? Such as--the culture of american capitalism threatens indigenous or local cultures? Or in a more narrow sense that the "culture" of market capitalism undermines "culture" in an Arnoldian sense, where culture means a particular realm that should remain outside of market values, e.g. an intellectual or aesthetic or spiritual realm. Or perahps both?
